User and workstation details
Screen, keyboard and mouse
An unticked line is an issue. Carry it to the actions table with an owner and a date.
- Top of the screen is at or slightly below eye level
- Screen is about an arm's length away
- Text is sharp, comfortably sized, and free of flicker
- Screen is free of glare and reflections
- Brightness and contrast are adjusted for the room
- Keyboard sits flat with space to rest wrists in front of it
- Wrists stay straight while typing, not bent up or pressed on an edge
- Mouse sits next to the keyboard, within easy reach
- Documents used while typing sit on a holder or between keyboard and screen
- Multiple screens are aligned at matching heights
Chair, desk and posture
- Chair height set so forearms are level with the desk
- Feet flat on the floor, or on a footrest
- Backrest supports the lower back
- All chair adjustments work and the user knows how to use them
- A small gap between the seat edge and the back of the knees
- Room to change posture and stretch
- Frequently used items within arm's reach
- No pressure on the underside of the thighs while seated
- Desk deep enough for the screen distance
- Cables managed so they do not restrict leg room
Environment and breaks
- Lighting suits the task without throwing glare onto the screen
- Blinds or desk position control window glare
- Noise does not make concentration or calls difficult
- Temperature and air are comfortable for sustained work
- Screen work is broken up with short frequent breaks or task changes, such as 5 to 10 minutes each hour
- The user knows how to report discomfort and to whom
- The user knows they can request an eye test paid for by the employer
- Software is usable without workarounds that force awkward posture
Laptop and home working
- A laptop used for long spells is raised on a stand or riser
- A separate keyboard and mouse are used with the laptop
- The home workstation has been through this same checklist
- A suitable chair is available at home; a sofa or bed is not a full-day workstation
- Home lighting has been checked for screen glare
- The user knows equipment (stand, keyboard, mouse, chair) can be requested from the employer
- Breaks and finish times are kept when working from home
- Discomfort while home working is reported the same way as in the office
