Panic button apps, explained.
A panic button app turns a worker's phone into a silent duress alarm: one gesture sends their identity, live location and often live audio to a monitored response. The app is only as good as who answers it, so the number to ask any vendor for is their median operator pickup time. Ours is seven seconds.
What a good panic button app actually does
The button is the easy part. A serious panic button app does four things: it can be triggered fast and silently (slide-to-alert, triple-tap, or a paired wearable button), it sends live location rather than a street address, it keeps working when conditions are bad (weak signal, locked phone, low battery), and it lands somewhere staffed, not in an email inbox.
The fourth point is where most apps fail. An alert that notifies a manager who is driving, in a meeting or asleep has not summoned help. Purpose-built systems route every activation to accredited 24/7 monitoring, where a trained operator opens the case, sees the location, and escalates to emergency services when it is needed.
Where an app alone falls short
A phone in a bag is a panic button out of reach. In an escalating confrontation, reaching for a phone can itself escalate the situation, and in a fall or medical event the worker may not be able to reach anything at all. That is why the strongest setups pair the app with a discreet wearable trigger, and why automatic protections matter: safety timers that escalate when a visit runs over, missed check-ins, and fall detection.
In our FY26 monitoring data, 17% of alarms were raised automatically with nobody pressing anything. An app-only setup without those automatic layers leaves exactly those incidents uncovered.
