What is lone worker safety?
Lone worker safety is the set of controls that protect people who work without close supervision - a risk assessment specific to lone work, a reliable way to raise an alarm, and a response that actually arrives. It matters because the usual safety net of nearby colleagues is absent, which regulators treat as raising, not lowering, the duty of care.
What does the law require for lone workers?
Australia (WHS Act), New Zealand (HSWA 2015) and the UK (HSWA 1974) all place a primary duty of care on the employer, with no exemption for solo work. In practice regulators expect a documented lone-worker risk assessment, a way to summon help that does not depend on the worker being able to speak, and reliable escalation. How do you protect a lone worker?
Layer three things: a way to raise the alarm that works mid-incident and without a phone (a wearable duress device or app), automatic triggers for when the worker cannot act (fall detection, missed check-ins, safety timers), and a monitored response that answers fast, around the clock. In our FY26 data the median time to a trained operator was 7 seconds.
When are lone workers most at risk?
After hours and on weekends. In the FY26 monitoring data, 34% of confirmed emergencies happened after hours despite only 22% of activations, and Sunday activations confirmed as emergencies at roughly double the weekday rate. Risk peaks exactly when informal supervision is thinnest.
